Hier eine Email von heute eines Freundes aus Melbourne:

"Omicron is spreading wildly here in Australia. The government, under pressure from the business community, decided not to do anything about it when it first came. The result is 20000 cases per day. Transport workers have been infected to the extent that many supermarket shelves are empty because there is a shortage of people to do the deliveries. This should only be temporary. The population is avoiding city centres to avoid catching COVID so that the business community is now complaining that people aren’t spending.

When I arrived back in Melbourne early December, no-one was using rapid test kits. Close to Christmas with the requirement to be COVID free in order to travel, the PCR testing stations became overwhelmed and even the medical profession weren’t able to get tests done. So the government said we should all use the rapid tests, but there weren’t any because all the local manufacturers had sold their stock overseas on account of the government not previously approving their use. So they really messed up the whole thing. What a bunch of morons! The only good thing is that the vaccination rate is high enough that the hospitals are still coping."
